Piemonte DOC Sauvignon

Piemonte DOC Sauvignon: the fresh and surprising face of Monferrato

Take a white wine with an international character, add a good dose of quintessentially Piedmontese spirit, leave it to rest in bâtonnage, and there you have the Piemonte DOC Sauvignon: a fresh, aromatic and incredibly surprising wine.

For whilst thoughts of Piedmont almost automatically turn to its great reds, the first taste of Piemonte DOC Sauvignon is bound to amaze with its unique balance and immense sensory pleasure.

One of the most widely grown grape varieties in the world… with a Piedmontese twist

Sauvignon Blanc is one of the most widespread grape varieties in the world. Grown in almost all the major wine-producing countries, the term ‘sauvage’ reveals its wild and spontaneous nature, but above all the robustness of the vine.

The numerous terroirs to which the grape variety has adapted are reflected in the organoleptic characteristics that create wines that differ greatly from one another: taut and mineral in the Loire, for example, explosive and tropical in New Zealand, with greater finesse and great aromatic elegance in Piedmont.

The hills of Monferrato offer particularly favourable conditions for growing this grape, as the temperature variations between day and night, typical of this area, help to preserve freshness and aromas.

The result is a wine that successfully combines two dimensions: the aromatic intensity typical of Sauvignon and the understated elegance characteristic of the Piedmontese style.

Piemonte DOC Sauvignon Monghisio: our take

One of the most interesting characteristics of Sauvignon in Piedmont is its ability to avoid extremes. Whilst in some parts of the world this grape variety can become almost pungent, in Monferrato it tends to retain a more ‘restrained’ profile, yet with a complex aromatic expression.

Our Piemonte DOC Sauvignon Monghisio takes its name from what has been known as Monghisio since 1663 (that is, a road, a sandy hillside overlooking the neighbouring municipality of Belveglio from Vinchio), though the local dialect has always referred to it as ‘Munghis’, meaning ‘high ground’ or ‘mountain of shells’ – one of the shell- and fossil-rich soils found in the vicinity of Vinchio.

Made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc grapes, this white wine is characterised by a pale straw-yellow colour, clear and luminous. The nose opens with an intense bouquet of white flowers and boxwood blossoms, followed by notes of exotic fruit, particularly pineapple and lychee. On the palate, it is fresh and mineral: perfect for this season.

Pairings? It’s (almost) impossible to get it wrong!

The versatility of Piemonte DOC Sauvignon is undoubtedly one of its key strengths. Piemonte DOC Sauvignon pairs well with: light starters, grilled or seasonal vegetables, fish and seafood dishes, fresh cheeses, and even the most delicate Asian cuisine.

It is a wine that works through contrast or harmony, depending on the dish, which makes it almost impossible to get the pairing wrong!
